When you’ve watched Amelia Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy for years, she becomes more than a character. And now fans are desperate to learn more about the woman who transformed from Derek Shepherd’s troubled sister to a renowned neurosurgeon.
“I think, obviously, things are looking up for Amelia. They can’t get much more down,” Caterina Scorsone (who plays Amelia) told E! News. “I know that this whole season, there’s been the emphasis on bringing some of the lighthearted humor back, infusing it into the show in the way that we had it a little earlier on… I think that, again, now that we’ve gotten through this very tragic storyline, I’m anticipating and I’m starting to see there’s a lot of lightness in store, a lot of light in store for Amelia.” Keep scrolling to learn more about Amelia!
Who is Amelia Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy?
Amelia is a neurosurgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial. She was first introduced on the show during Season 3 as Derek Shepherd’s younger sister. She is now a series regular and the Chief of Neurosurgery at the hospital.
How old is Amelia Shepherd?
The ages of the doctors on Grey’s are rarely discussed. Caterina is 35 years old but does that mean Amelia is the same age? There’s a lot of fan speculation surrounding her age. One theory suggests that she is 42 years old based off of Derek’s age (they were seven years apart), but other fans say she is only 35 years old. It’s safe to assume Amelia is anywhere between her late thirties to early forties.
Do Amelia and Owen have a baby?
The topic of having a baby has been one that’s fueled a lot of discord between Owen Hunt and Amelia. While Owen is dead-set on having a child, Amelia decided that she doesn’t want to have a baby with her husband. But, what Owen doesn’t know is that Amelia already had a baby. During her time on Private Practice, she got pregnant by her late-fiancé. He overdosed and she later discovered that she was carrying his child.
Sadly, her baby was born without a brain and only lived for a short amount of time. After his death, she donated his organs.
Was Amelia Shepherd on Private Practice?
Yes, Caterina was a recurring character and later became one of the main characters on the Grey’s spin-off. She played the same role on the show alongside Addison Montgomery Shepherd (played by Kate Walsh) who was the star of the show.
Much of her backstory was developed on Private Practice. Viewers saw her relapse from getting clean from drugs. They watched her receive an intervention from her fellow doctors, and struggle to get clean again. Amelia’s evolution from a wild child to a responsible surgeon is one that shouldn’t be overlooked especially with her most recent storyline about having a brain tumor. It was revealed last week that a lot of her decision-making has been impacted by the tumor. So, was Amelia always so emotional and impulsive or has that all been a side effect of her brain tumor?
Is Amelia leaving Grey’s Anatomy?
It was revealed on the Season 14 premiere that Amelia had a brain tumor, so now fans are scared the doctor is going to leave the show… or worse, die. “I don’t think I should say anything about that,” Kevin McKidd (who plays Owen) previosuly said. “I don’t want to torture anyone, but that’s part of the fun of the show. I hate to be that person, but a brain surgery is a very, very serious surgery, and with a tumor this developed, it’s not an easy procedure, by any means.”
But, after the recent episode, it looks like Amelia is going to be okay after all. And she might even have a chance to leave her doomed thinking in the past. “This is an opportunity, whether it’s because of the tumor or not, to re-pattern her thinking and kind of re-groove her brain and her thought patterns to have a potentially more hopeful default setting,” Caterina continued. “So hopefully, whether or not it was the tumor that made her feel this way or it was the trauma from her childhood, hopefully, this is a kind of release from the prison from that kind of thinking that’ll allow her to move forward in a different way.”
