Jennifer Aniston Urges Fans to 'Celebrate' Matthew Perry's Memory

While Jennifer Aniston has moved on with her life, she’s not forgetting her Friends co-star Matthew Perry. Aniston stepped out to attend the Critics Choice Awards show on Sunday night. There, she shared her thoughts and memories of Perry, who died on October 28, 2023, from acute effects of ketamine.

When asked by Entertainment Tonight what people could do to keep Perry’s legacy alive, Jennifer Aniston said that people should “celebrate him.”

This is a sentiment shared by Jennifer Aniston and others in the Friends cast. Matthew Perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub by paramedics. The actor’s autopsy report listed drowning, coronary heart disease, and buprenorphine effects as other mitigating factors.

Jennifer Aniston Reveals Her Last Text from Matthew Perry

Jennifer Aniston chatted with Variety about her last interaction with Matthew Perry. “He was happy. He was healthy. (And) he had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know,” Aniston said, through tears.

In the Variety interview, Reese Witherspoon, who stars with Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show, held Aniston’s hand as she wiped tears off of her face. “I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. (And) he was happy.”

Matthew Perry spent time talking about his addiction issues while on a book tour. He wrote a memoir in which he talked about his substance abuse issues and working to stay sober. Aniston added, “I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. (And) he really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.”

‘Friends’ Cast Shared Grief With Series’ Fans

Matthew Perry played Chandler Bing on Friends throughout the show’s time on NBC. Other cast members also posted messages and shared their grief.

“It’s so beautiful,” Jennifer Aniston said about the show’s fans’ love case. “I hope he can know that he was loved in a way he never thought he was.”

In the time after his death, the Matthew Perry Foundation was created as a way to help struggling people with addiction issues.

Matthew Perry left a lot of funny memories behind him in death. He struggled for a long time to get clean and sober, a battle he detailed in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. Besides Jennifer Aniston, fellow Friends co-stars Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer took to social media and offered fans some comforting words.

Perry stayed active, working in both movies and TV. He played slob sportswriter Oscar Madison opposite Thomas Lennon’s Felix Unger in an updated version of The Odd Couple for TV. It ran for three seasons.

In October 2023, Matthew Perry let the world know, through a New York Times interview, that he was sober for 18 months. The actor believed that he “probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober” from alcohol and drug addiction.
