I more and more think being male but claiming non-binary or queer is just an excuse to publicly display horrible fashion sense and painted shiny nails...because those very solid binary traits are very solidly enby traits...
It has always seemed a bit of a clown-world
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 1, 2021 4:01 AM |
R1 there really needs to be a study done on "nonbinary" men. I bet they have a much higher rate of narcissistic personality disorder than typical males.
It's also funny because nonbinary means you don't proscribe to gender rules, but in order to SHOW their enbyness they go directly to the opposite gender stereotypes.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 2 | October 1, 2021 4:06 AM |
This trend is not going away. Once that barrier is broken there is no going back. Just another gender constraint going into the history books and that is a good thing
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 1, 2021 4:09 AM |
Painted nails can look good, but you need to be a rockstar or just a super stud, to pull it off.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 1, 2021 4:10 AM |
R3 you don't break the gender binary by buying into the gender binary.
No one would know they're nonbinary if they didn't wear women's clothing (or for the lazy, new pronouns) though, so that seems to point more towards the "performative" nature of enbyness.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 1, 2021 4:14 AM |
Straight kids were legit doing that in the late 90s/early 00s. The trend has only grown.
Hell, Carson Daly used to do that on Total Request Live when I was a kid.

R4 agreed, if it's done in the name of art, part of the package of the musician.
I don't think I've seen a rocker or grunge rocker go for rainbow colored pastels, though.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 1, 2021 4:15 AM |
R7 the nails were black, which was an homage to rock and grunge. Not pastel.
R6 No one claimed it was exclusive to those two groups of men. But it's definitely concentrated there.

[quote]the nails were black, which was an homage to rock and grunge. Not pastel.
Oh, so you didn't have anything to dispute the idea that men were painting their nails decades ago so then you decided to add another hurdle.
So now it's not about painting nails it's about the COLOR of nails.
And no, not everyone that did that was into "rock" and "grunge." It was very in for a while and like any fad it has its imitators who don't know the root of it.
You think Dennis Rodman really cared about all of that back then?
You think A$AP Rocky cares about that now?
People have been doing it for decades. Straight people have been doing it for decades. For some odd reason, someone has a problem when gay people do it.
Sounds like someone has an issue with their masculinity and for some utterly dumb reason, they're linking nail painting to it.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 1, 2021 4:31 AM |
Straight guys are doing this too.
Penn Jillette has been painting one of his finger nails red for many years now, in honor of his mother.

Hm, how long until the judgy, sullen eldergays go away? It's like they're on their own little perverse (could it be more, really though?) version of RPDR except it's just them screeching:
Men can NEVER wear nail polish. It ALWAYS looks bad!
Women MUST cut their long hair off at age fifty. Long hair on old women ALWAYS looks bad!
ALL men NEED to do (insert tedious grooming practice)! If they DON'T, they are DISGUSTING!
It's like some fuckin Eldergay Ten Commandments.
For how the LGBTQ2S (yes we WERE and ARE all of those things around the WORLD) people used to be in history.... some of the most bold avant garde, wild, talented artistic people in human history were us, and some have opined that in some civilizations we were held high because of the way we were spiritually, metacognitively, how we brought incredible visions in art, story telling, music. Psychic abilities, shamanism.
Now we are like hard as rocks banging around judging women's bodies and men's style choices worse than straight people do to each other.

Over ten years ago, in Seattle, I saw a grocery clerk with a perfect French manicure. Other than his nails, he was very masculine looking, wearing the Seattle uniform of jeans and a flannel shirt. He must have worn gloves while he was stocking shelves, to protect his manicure. At the time, I assumed he was a drag queen when he wasn't working in the grocery store. But who knows, he could have been straight. Bottom line - this "fad" has been around for a long time.

Interesting how cultural norms differ. In Vietnam, where I lived 3 years, most working class men keep the nail on their pinkies very long, to bring them good fortune. This is a throwback to ancient times when rich Vietnamese men had long nails to show that they didn’t have to work manually to have money.

What's unique about doing something plenty of others are also doing? Plus, the trend wasn't even fresh to start with because it's been done by previous generations.

I think the main issue here is that OP feels that it looks ugly on gay men when they "femme up" into pastel pointy nails.
I totally agree that it is a turnoff, but at the same time I'm not going to declare that they need to change their behavior to suit my tastes. I say that as someone who has dated and loved men with many "femme" personality traits. I can get down with longer hair, jewelry, higher voice, a man purse (my husband wears one), acting campy/vampy, doing drag on a specific occasion, etc. But I draw the line at regular makeup, or the guys who wear rings on every finger and bangles on each wrist, etc. Less is more. Again, that's just my preference, and don't get angry if I am not turned on by every male walking by me. LOL. To each 'their' own.
I am curious if anyone actually finds the guy in OP's link more attractive with baby blue pointy nails.

"Queer" never meant "gay"... it was a derogatory epithet and smear for any gay man who wasn't macho. It was much like "faggot".
I have no idea why any self-respecting lesbian, gay man, or bisexual person would ever want to be called "Queer".
by Anonymous | reply 112 | October 11, 2021 12:24 AM |
Queer is NOT an "umbrella term". It cannot be, because it's not inclusive. It's divisive. I am a gay man. I AM NOT QUEER. Never was, never will be. Fuck all these idiots trying to reclaim a terrible put-down like that.
Queer means "wrong", "bad", "not right", "off"... that doesn't describe homosexual people. Gay people are not "queer". We're not broken, we're not in need of being fixed.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | October 11, 2021 12:26 AM |
I like the term "Queer." Totally cool with it. But it wasn't a common pejorative of my youth, the actual word "gay" was the most common putdown in that realm (and it's still used a lot that way today). But I'd never tell someone they shouldn't label themselves "gay" because of the negative connotation of my youth.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 114 | October 11, 2021 12:52 AM |
“Queer” means mentally ill straight women in opposite sex relationships who think they have the right to tell gay and lesbian people how to live their lives. If this was the 60’s, they’d be garden variety religious homophobes. But now we’re supposed to check our privilege and cede to floor to them for some reason.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | October 11, 2021 1:00 AM |
The gay people embracing 'queer' these days heard "that's so GAY" all throughout their adolescence (and in a lot of cases, beyond that). To them, 'gay' is tainted but 'queer' is not.

R114, when I was a teen in the 80s, the go-to insults were “queer” and “fag”/“faggot”; “gay” was not considered an insult and didn’t become one until “that’s gay” emerged in the 90s.
I prefer gay or even homosexual and find “queer” deeply offensive, both because of its status as an epithet and also because it’s used by straight girls wanting to appear edgy.

When I was gay bashed, it was from people calling me "queer" not gay. "Fag" not gay.
The common game to play -- even gym teachers at school made us play it -- was called "smear the queer". Not "smear the gay".
Gay is fine. Queer is absolutely fucking NOT. Queer is wrong, bad, pejorative, put-down, dismissive, othering, and awful.
Fuck anyone who tries to call me queer. I will lay you out if you do.

[quote]As a straight woman. I like my men to look like men. No nail polish and no female handbag. Masculine looking men are sexy with an old school swagger.
So no shaving below the belt, big thick hairy bush then right? Big bushy beard too if you wan a man to actually look like a man. Or are you just stereotyping what men should be in your mind. Personally I think all woman should have big tits and blond hair. Woman with short hair and wear pants are manly.

I saw a porn recently and they obviously didn't have any nail polish remover handy and you could tell the dude tried to scrape it off before the shoot. I think it's a boner killer.

Why are we so performative as a cohort? Just be yourself and quit the window dressing and beauty routines.

Drop the polish and get a haircut. Also maybe some normal clothes. Oh and hide the ink, it lowers you.
